Once upon time time in Canaan, Abraham figured it was about time for his son Isaac to find a wife. But there was a catch-no local girls allowed! So, he called up his oldest servant (who probably had more frequent flyer miles than anyone else) and said, “Go find a wife for Isaac from my homeland. No pressure, but she has to be perfect.”
Feeling the weight of this matchmaking mission, the servant packed up ten camel. When he got to Nahor, he stopped by a well and prayed, “God, let the right girl give me water-and help out my camels too.” (He figured if she could handle thirsty camels, she could handle Isaac’s quirks.)
Then along came Rebekah, who offered water and even took the time to water all ten camels. That’s like making coffee for the whole office-twice! The servant knew right away she was the one. He gave her some jewelry, and she accepted it without wondering if it matched her sandals (a true sign of humility right there).
Rebekah’s family was on board with the whole idea, and she bravely decided to head off to meet Isaac, trusting in God’s plan. When Isaac laid eyes on her, he was so moved he almost tripped over his sandals. They got married, and Isaac loved Rebekah like crazy.
What can we learn from their story?
Love often shows up when you’re just going about your daily routine, like watering camels under the sun.
Small acts of kindness and generosity mean a lot; these little gestures can create stronger connections.
Trusting in God’s plan can lead to amazing adventures and experiences that can shape your life in unexpected ways. And if someone asks you to water ten camels, just say yes! You never know the blessings that might come from such simple requests.
To find a truly great partner, look for wells that has water and avoid night clubs and search for community and service spaces. Seek out places filled with life and purpose, like outreach programs, Bible studies, mission projects and church fellowships.
So, what made Rebekah stand out as Isaac’s future wife? Let’s dig a little deeper.
Kindness and hospitality. When Abraham’s servant showed up at the well, he prayed for a sign-a woman who would offer him and his camels some water. Rebekah not only gave him water but also went the extra mile and drew water for all ten camels, showing her generosity and servant heart.
Diligence. Drawing water for ten camels was no small feat. It showed Rebekah’s willingness to put in hard work.
Family lineage. Rebekah came from Abraham’s extended family, which was what Abraham wanted. He preferred that Isaac marry someone from his own people, not from the Canaanites-think of it as choosing someone who shares your faith.
Faith and willingness. When asked if she would leave her family and travel to marry Isaac, Rebekah didn’t hesitate. She showed faith and readiness to embrace what God had planned for her.
These qualities-kindness, hospitality, diligence, appropriate lineage, and faith-made Rebekah the clear choice for Isaac.
