Why I Believe Young Christians Should Guard Their Hearts Before Marriage

Modern dating tells young people to date many people, experiment, follow their feelings, and discover who is “right” through experience.

The Bible presents a very different picture.

While the modern concept of dating does not appear in Scripture, God gives timeless principles that protect our hearts, our purity, and our future marriages.

1. Guard Your Heart

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)

Our hearts are precious. Every romantic relationship leaves an imprint. Repeated heartbreak, emotional attachment, and sexual temptation can make it harder to enter marriage with an undivided heart.

God’s commands are not meant to restrict us but to protect us.

2. Purity Is a Gift Worth Preserving

Scripture consistently calls believers to sexual purity.

Physical intimacy belongs within the covenant of marriage, not before it.

Saving yourself for marriage is not old-fashioned—it is God’s design. It protects both your body and your heart while honoring the person you may one day marry.

Purity is not simply about avoiding sin; it is about loving God enough to trust that His design is best.

3. Don’t Treat Relationships as Entertainment

Many people today date simply to avoid loneliness, gain attention, or experience romance.

But a Christian relationship should never be treated as a pastime.

If you are not ready for marriage, wisdom asks whether you are ready to pursue a romantic relationship.

Every relationship should be approached prayerfully, with honesty, maturity, and the intention of discerning whether marriage is God’s will.

4. Look for Godly Character

The world often values appearance, popularity, wealth, and chemistry.

Scripture teaches us to value something far greater—character.

Does this person love Christ?

Do they obey His Word?

Are they humble, honest, faithful, and self-controlled?

A relationship built on godly character has a much stronger foundation than one built only on attraction.

5. Trust God’s Timing

There is enormous pressure today to find someone quickly.

But Scripture never tells us to chase relationships.

Instead, it calls us to seek God first.

Use your single years to grow in faith, develop wisdom, serve others, and become the person God wants you to be.

Whether God calls you to marriage or to lifelong singleness, your life already has purpose because your identity is found in Christ.

A Word to Young People

You do not have to date around to find your future spouse.

You do not have to give pieces of your heart away to many people before giving it to your husband or wife.

Protect your heart.

Protect your purity.

Protect your future marriage.

The world’s way often promises freedom but leaves many with regret and brokenness.

God’s way may seem narrow, but it leads to peace, wisdom, and blessing.

Conclusion

The Bible does not give us a modern dating manual, but it gives us something even better—it gives us God’s wisdom.

His design is not meant to keep us from joy but to prepare us for lasting love.

A young man or woman who walks with God, guards their heart, pursues purity, and waits upon the Lord is not missing out. They are building a foundation that can bless a marriage for a lifetime.
