“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” — Ecclesiastes 1:2 (ESV)
The words of Ecclesiastes echo through time as a sobering reminder of the emptiness of life apart from God. King Solomon, one of the wisest and wealthiest men who ever lived, experienced nearly every earthly pleasure imaginable—power, riches, wisdom, accomplishments, and influence. Yet after pursuing everything this world could offer, he concluded that life “under the sun” is vanity when God is not its center.
Today, the world still measures success by wealth, status, recognition, and personal achievement. People spend their lives pursuing things that promise happiness but can never satisfy the deepest needs of the soul. The applause fades, possessions wear out, and earthly accomplishments are eventually left behind. This present world is passing away, and those who live only for it will ultimately discover that it cannot give eternal life or lasting peace.
But Jesus Christ came to rescue us from this present evil world and to bring us into the kingdom of God. As believers, we are no longer called to live for the things of this world or to love its passing pleasures. Our citizenship is in heaven, and our hearts are to be fixed on things above, not on earthly things.
Jesus taught us:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
Our highest pursuit is not success, comfort, or recognition—it is the kingdom of God. Everything we do should flow from our desire to know Christ, obey Him, and glorify Him. Whether our work is great or small, seen or unseen, it has eternal value when it is done for the King.
Ecclesiastes reminds us that life lived for this world is vanity. But life lived for the kingdom of God has eternal purpose. Jesus has already saved us from this world; therefore, let us not be captivated by it. Instead, let us live as pilgrims and ambassadors, eagerly awaiting the return of our Lord.
Reflection
As followers of Christ, our lives should not revolve around building earthly kingdoms but around seeking God’s kingdom. This world is temporary, but God’s kingdom is eternal. Let us hold loosely to the things of this life and cling tightly to Christ, knowing that our true treasure is in heaven.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for rescuing us through Your Son, Jesus Christ, and calling us into Your eternal kingdom. Forgive us for the times we have been distracted by the things of this world and have sought temporary treasures instead of eternal ones.
Teach us to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Help us not to love this world or the things that are passing away, but to set our hearts on Christ and the promises You have prepared for those who love You.
Give us wisdom to use every opportunity, every gift, and every resource for Your glory. May our lives reflect that our hope is not in earthly success but in the coming King and His everlasting kingdom.
Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus as we wait for His return. May we remain faithful until the day we stand before Him.
