“Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” – Ecclesiastes 1:2 (ESV)
The words of Ecclesiastes echo through time as a sobering reminder of the emptiness of life apart from God. King Solomon, one of the wisest and wealthiest men to ever live, experienced every form of success imaginable—power, riches, wisdom, and pleasure. Yet, after all his pursuits, he concluded that everything under the sun is meaningless without God at the center.
In today’s world, success is often defined by achievements, possessions, and recognition. People chase after careers, wealth, and influence, believing these things will bring lasting satisfaction. But as Solomon discovered, worldly success fades quickly. The applause stops, the wealth can vanish, and the sense of fulfillment disappears as soon as the next goal appears. Without Jesus, even the greatest accomplishments leave the heart empty.
Jesus offers a different kind of success—one rooted in eternal purpose rather than temporary gain. When He is at the center of our lives, success is no longer measured by what is accumulated but by how our lives reflects His love and truth. True success is found in obedience, humility, and service to God. It is living with the assurance that every effort, no matter how small, has eternal value when done for His glory.
Ecclesiastes reminds us, believers, that life without God is vanity, but life with Jesus is abundant and meaningful. The pursuit of worldly success may bring temporary satisfaction, but only Christ can fill the soul with lasting peace and joy.
Reflection:
Success in this world means nothing without Jesus in our lives. He gives purpose to every achievement and transforms every moment into an opportunity to glorify God. In Him, life is no longer vanity—it becomes a testimony of grace, faith, and eternal hope.
Let us all pray.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of life and the blessings that surround us each day. Yet, in the midst of all that this world offers, remind our hearts that true fulfillment is found only in Christ. Teach us to see that everything under the sun—wealth, success, and pleasure—is fleeting and empty without Your presence.
Lord, guard us against the distractions of worldly pursuits that draw attention away from You. Please help us keep our eyes on what is eternal, not on what is temporary. Fill our hearts with a longing for Your kingdom and a deep desire to walk in Your truth.
Grant us wisdom to live with purpose, humility, and faithfulness. When the world tempts us with its vanities, strengthen us to look straight ahead—to the promise of Jesus’ return. May our every thought, word, and action reflect the hope of eternity and the joy of belonging to You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
