The Gospel: Edited For Your Comfort

The Gospel: Edited For Your Comfort

Pastor Miguel is the new guy at a small church near Quezon City. He loved sharing stories with everyone. At first, he spoke confidently about love, forgiveness, and living a different life. People listened, and some even made big changes. But as the church grew, Pastor Miguel noticed some folks getting uneasy when he talked about topics like sacrifice and repentance. Worried about losing them, he started to tone down his message.

He shifted his focus to the feel-good parts of the gospel–kindness, acceptance, and hope—avoiding anything that might ruffle feathers. The church services became super popular, with the building packed every Sunday. But over time, Pastor Miguel realized something odd. More people were showing up, but fewer lives were being transformed. The message had become so soft that it no longer pushed anyone to grow. The gospel that used to be vibrant and powerful now felt a bit bland.

One evening, an old friend came by and told Pastor Miguel, “Your words are nice, but they lack the strength to heal or inspire. The truth, even when it’s hard to hear, is what really sets people free.” Pastor Miguel had an epiphany; in trying to keep everyone happy, he had watered down the very message that had once changed his own life. So, he decided to go back to sharing the entire gospel—its comforts and its challenges—believing that the truth, when spoken in love, was exactly what people needed.

Now, let’s see what is happening to the church.

It’s clear there’s a trend towards churches nowadays focusing on prosperity instead of sacrifice, stressing material blessings and personal success over the deeper calls for repentance and discipleship.

Sin and the need for repentance are often downplayed, turning the gospel into just self-improvement instead of a life-changing experience through Christ. Sometimes, it comes down to moralistic view where being a good person or following rules is prioritized over trusting Jesus for salvation.

The blending of the gospel with popular culture often overshadows its key truths. Sometimes I see New Age concepts being mixed with the words from the Bible. Some even promote Universalism, suggesting everyone will be saved without faith in Jesus, which moves away from traditional teachings on salvation. Additionally, some forget to acknowledge the Lordship of Christ, focusing only on Him as our Savior and skipping over His call for obedience and real life changes.

Avoiding the harsh realities can lead to sharing the gospel in a way that skips over judgment, hell and the real cost of being a disciple. Instead, it just focuses on the more comforting aspects of faith.

The devil knows how to distract us by sweetening the truth of the Gospel. There’s definitely heaven for those who believe, but hell for those who don’t. These days, though, it seems like hell isn’t talked about much anymore. Everyone’s all about good vibes, and love is love has taken over the fact that hell is for real.

While we cannot control what majority of the churches are teaching, we can live out the Gospel even while others are diluting it. As Christians, let’s keep trusting in Jesus. Believe in Jesus as your Savior and Lord. Count on His grace instead of just your own efforts for salvation. Love God and others. Make loving God your top priority (Matthew 22:37). Show real love, kindness, and forgiveness to everyone (John 13: 34-35). Follow Jesus’ teachings. Read the Bible and put those teachings into practice. Be humble, honest, and compassionate. Repent and grow. Own up to your mistakes and ask God for forgiveness. Aim to grow and change, becoming more like Jesus everyday. Serve others. Help out those in need, whether they’re in your faith community or not. Use your time and talents to create a positive impact. Share the Good News. Talk about Jesus with your words and actions. Live in a way that shows God’s love and hope. Stay connected to God. Pray regularly and look for God’s guidance. Worship on your own and with others. Be part of a faith community. Join with other believers for support and encouragement. Get involved in church, small groups, or service projects. And most important is be part of a church that teach sound doctrine, and practice it.

Please join me in prayer.

Heavenly Father,

We come before You in humble hearts, seeking Your guidance and strength. Lord, we ask that You protect the truth of Your Gospel in our hearts, our churches, and our communities. Guard us against any temptation to dilute, change, or compromise Your Word for the sake of comfort or acceptance. Grant us wisdom and discernment to recognize Your Truth and the courage to stand firm in it. Help us to share the gospel with love, clarity, and conviction, always pointing others to the saving Grace of Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit empower us to live out the fullness of Your message, unashamed and unwavering. Let your Truth shine brightly through us, drawing others to Your love and salvation.

In Jesus Name,

Amen.
